This series features stylized sunflowers, each designed to have unique patterns and meanings. Picking a flower to work with was inspired by the Unikko flower design within the Finnish design house Marimekko. I chose sunflowers, since they have become powerful symbols of Ukraine and freedom.
The sunflowers are stylized into circular forms and mostly drawn on circular paper. This shape is intentional: the sunflowers are made to look like eyes taking notice of all the war crimes, perpetrated by russians, in Ukraine to make sure every terrorist is brought to justice and punished.
On the other hand, the sunflowers also build on the Nordic theme of Tulivuoren Piirroksia. The circular designs were also created to evoke images of erupting volcanoes seen from above with colors reversed. This way, the black middle of the sunflower is like the volcano crater, and the black patterns, which stem from the center, reference lava descending from the volcano.
In each case, the sunflowers are clever design combinations of Ukrainian and Nordic cultures!
